Feild Research and Residencies

Feild Journaling

Sketching, photographing, and simply being present in nature are the fundamental forces that guide my creative practice. The research aspect of my work takes on a multitude of forms as I hike through rugged trails, canoe along tranquil waterways, and immerse myself fully and deeply within diverse natural environments. I listen attentively to my surroundings, making detailed notes, writing evocative words, and sketching thoughts that are at once reflective and keenly observational. This field research, which transcends the mere need to find practical answers to everyday life situations, opens a margin of space where one can simply exist, free from urgency. It serves as a form of medicine for the mind and a profound, richly fertile wellspring of inspiration and creative fodder.

Canadian Wilderness Artist Residency, Yukon Territory

The Canadian Wilderness Artist Residency in Yukon Territory both moved through and operated within the traditional territory of the: Kwanlin Dün, Ta’an Kwäch‘än, Little Salmon/Carmacks, Selkirk, and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nations. This immersive experience included canoeing the Yukon River between Whitehorse and Dawson City for 17 days with a cohort of 11 other artist, an experience that has deeply impacted my art practice. During our time on the river we experienced reliance and reciprocity with the land and the people that we met. The research done on location was painting and sketchbook documentation as direct reaction to the space and experiences.
